Bio
Bill Gotha has been painting all his life, but began painting professionally in 2014. He specializes in New England landscapes and seascapes; his favorite medium is oil paint. He paints en plein air and in his studio in Andover, MA. He minored in Fine Art at Holy Cross College in Worcester, Mass. and has studied painting at the Museum of Fine Art in Boston and the George Walter Vincent Smith Art Museum in Springfield, MA. He is a former naval officer, was art director for several publishers in the Boston area, and managed an international marketing company.
Bill had his first one-man show at Greenwald Gallery in Lowell, MA in May, 2016. In reviewing the show, Artscope Magazine remarked, “His work conveys the atmospheric feelings of the locations he paints, be it grass blades close by or threatening storm clouds hovering over distant mountains.” In February, 2017, Bill had a two-man show with conceptual artist Joe Flaherty at Robert Lincoln Levy Gallery in Portsmouth, NH. The artists interpreted the same subject in their distinctly different styles, and the results were both educational and entertaining. Bill exhibits at Ceres Gallery in Portsmouth, NH and Nantucket Carving and Folk Art Gallery in Nantucket, MA. He also participates in numerous juried and non-juried shows at New England art associations and regional art museums. In early 2017, he participated in a juried exhibit/auction at Missoula Art Museum in Missoula, Montana and had two paintings in a juried exhibit sponsored by Whistler House Museum of Art in Lowell, MA. In May and June, 2017, Bill’s painting “Cliffs at Sand Beach” was part of the Oil Painters of America National Exhibit at Eisele Gallery of Fine Art in Cincinnati, OH. |
Artist Statement
"I've been painting landscapes since I was a teenager. My travels have taken me from the mountains of New England to the mountains of the West where I have searched for dramatic scenes that feature strong subjects and dramatic light. My favorite medium is oil paint. When I travel, I often do small color studies of paintings that I plan to execute in a larger size. The complete process includes photography for reference, pencil/charcoal sketch for composition and detail, oil or acrylic color study, on-location rough blocking, and finished oil painting. A single painting can take weeks or even months to complete.
"Along with minoring in fine art at Holy Cross College in Worcester, Mass., I've studied painting at the Museum of Fine Art in Boston and the Smith Art Museum in Springfield, Mass. I've visited numerous art museums in America and Europe trying to learn more about color and brush technique by observing the masters. I worked as design director for SAIL Magazine in Boston, founder and president of Ward Hill Marketing, Inc. in Lawrence/Lowell, and international marketing consultant before launching my painting studio in Andover, Mass. I love what I'm doing, and welcome any comments or suggestions from artists, gallery owners, and people who appreciate art." |
