Daniel Kathalynas
Daniel Kathalynas was born in Scranton,
Pennsylvania on December 16, 1971. He received outstanding art awards since he was a child in juried scholastic exhibits in Scranton. Daniel began taking accelerated college art classes while still in high school and graduated from Keystone College for Fine Art in 1992. Living in NYC from 1992 - 2007, Kathalynas studied and exhibited his artwork and music in the Big Apple throughout his time there. Today, Kathalynas is the resident artist at the Norfolk Botanical Garden and a former resident artist of the Hermitage Museum in Norfolk, VA. He teaches painting, guitar performance, and meditation throughout the Hampton Roads area in Virginia. |
Kathalynas begins making art in a moving meditation. Primarily, he works with acrylic paint and frequently includes other materials such as glass, stones, sand and wood to forge a multi-dimensional view and a non-conscious symbolism which he calls “Emot-spirituals”.
For me, making art is the co-creation of spirit and man. Teaching acrylic painting to all ages and leading meditation classes has helped me understand that the world inside (feelings, thoughts and the motives for actions) can meet the canvas. Studying the “emotional body” apart from the “physical body” has led me to create in an abstracted and simple form while not skipping the beauty of nuance, stroke, and color.
My heritage and background is Lithuanian/Polish-American. My grandfather, George "Boyd" Kathalynas, was a featherweight champion boxer and my grandmother grew up speaking Polish on a farm in Northeastern Pennsylvania. - D. Kathalynas
