"Roots" is the boastful voice of youth, marching down the street of any Carnaval, in any city. Gazing forward, we walk with purpose; armed by our history. - Howard Hendiar-Karnen Etwaroo
About The Artist
Artist Statement
The inspiration for the main piece within my submission application comes from anagricultural tribe, the Karo, located within southern Ethiopia. The Karo tribe, rich in cultural traditions that are steeped in their ancestry and reflective of their modern way of life provided a strong motivation for me to depict the richness and diversity of the African Community. Beautification becomes infused with their the desire to uphold proud tradition as shown in elaborate body paint and adornments fashioned from materials from their homeland. As a West Indian from Guyana, South America, the flamboyant ceremonial aspect of many African cultures, including The Karo felt very familiar. Celebrations of Carnaval all over the world allow for a rich and vibrant platform that creates a beautiful tapestry of globalization and unity among countries that have diverged from their native lands under many different circumstances. I believe the theme of Diaspora is crucial in order to acknowledge the beauty of art and culture as well as how it came to be so that it can be preserved, refined, and shared with future generations to come who have a strong need and want to express their own identities. Celebration embodies respect for the important actions of those who have significantly
affected our own lives. It is uplifting. celebration is necessary. - Howard Etwaroo
Bio
Howard Etwaroo- As a youth, I would find myself daydreaming of exotic places that I saw on the television or read of in books. Being born in NewYork City and Guyanese i was exposed to many vibrant personalities and cultures. As i grew older and more interested in art, these attributes arose more and more in my style of art in an attempt to infuse all of my experiences which is why i typically tend to have varied styles and subject matter. My narrative for creating a piece is quite simply to find a concept that excites me and a playlist of music to guide my thoughts. I most often utilize acrylic and spray paint on canvas. My hope is that my enthusiasm for the subject matter i am addressing is communicated effectively through my pieces.
