Nia Stratos Tavlarides
"Making Rainbows"
Description:
I teach an Art Therapy class for children that can provide them with a non-verbal way to express themselves. Being creative is a way for kids to relate emotions and feelings in a tangible manner. Since these children are dealing with serious illnesses, the art becomes a method of expressing their inner feelings. Art is a vehicle for self expression and can be used to communicate more effectively – often helping families to understand what the sick person is going through. The child gets to exercise their creativity and express their emotions, which can be a form of meditation and self healing. The children create collages that incorporate magazine photos and small paintings/drawings .
Materials:
Watercolors, markers, pastels or crayons, paper and glue
