BIO
Tricia Bethel is a Grenadian born self-taught artist currently residing in China. She has graduated from Ren Min University with a bachelor's in Diplomacy and Jilin University with a master's in Public Diplomacy. While growing up, Tricia pursued hobbies like singing, modeling and playing music. Later she decided to dedicate her free time to painting while working full time to earn a living. Her love for painting has lead her to participate in several group exhibitions in Grenada. She also participated in the Beijing International Art Biennale 2015 before deciding to hold her first solo exhibition at the Grenada National Museum. She has since returned to China where she continues to exhibit and is working towards her second solo exhibition.
"I have been painting since the age of 14 and I learn from careful observation of many paintings and studying other artists. I paint in a combination of impressionism and most recently surrealism. I use brushes coupled with pallet knives on canvas when I need to create thicker brush strokes. Oils and acrylics are my chosen medium.
My subjects are mainly portraiture randomly chosen from photographs that speaks to me of a particular time or place. I try to capture their emotions, and bring them to life. Each painting evokes possible emotional memories of a familiar place. I am influenced by the works of Monet, Klimt, Fei Chin and Richard Burlet. I also enjoy painting landscapes and seascapes and because I have not been taught to limit my choices of subject matter, I paint whatever I feel like. One day I hope to become more focused."
Statement
"This represents a child's oneness with nature, the flowers and birds. They exist together peacefully."
