Bio
Vicki L. Marckel’s artistic career began on the farmlands of Defiance, Ohio, painting the local people and places. She continued her artistic training at Defiance College. After earning her Bachelor of Science in Visual Arts, she earned a Masters of Fine Arts from the Academy of Art University in Figurative Painting in 2012. As an instructor, Vicki Marckel teaches both at the secondary level and various workshops. Her work is in private and public collections and has won several awards over the years. In 2015, she was commissioned by the Catholic Coalition of the Arch Bishops to paint Saints of God, Come to Our Aid. This painting, which featured the saints of the Americas, was gifted to Pope Francis during his visit to the United States. Artist Statement “Painting challenges me to let go of the idea of perfection and explore my own sensitivity to contrasting environments. My work illuminates the rich tones of the sun as it filters through the rich landscape. Graphic compositional elements interplay light and shadow, and striking color contrast. My goal is to translate my experiences to the viewer, not just generate a copy of the landscape. The viewer can then feel the same enthusiasm and excitement of the scene. |
“Shadows have become a prominent feature within my work. I construct contrast as a means to help intensify the composition and highlight a particular moment. Viewers are drawn into my work due to the strong diagonal edges created by a vibrant color medley leading to a strong focal point. Thick applications of paint with a pallet knife in select areas of the composition are fashioned to add an extra layer of depth to the atmospheric perspective within the work. All these elements employ a seamlessly picturesque scene. I selectively simplify the plethora of stimuli of this environment to create clarity and focus within my work. “Art, for me, has always been about ‘transcending boundaries’ because I think of art as the universal language. My work is my way of translating my ideas of harmony, tranquility, and beauty to the viewer. Nature provides such a rich array of texture and vivid compositions that allows us to feel inner peace within our souls. Those inspiring moments and feelings I captured, both literally and expressively. ” |
