Vicki Marckel
My artistic career began on the farmlands of Defiance, Ohio painting the local people and places. I was awarded my Bachelor of Science in Visual Arts from the Defiance College. As an honors student, I studied art and architecture in Italy and the Netherlands.
I earned my Masters of Fine Arts from the Academy of Art University in 2012. During my studies in my masters program I learned the value of studying under artists of varying styles and media. I actively began supplementing my collegiate studies with the artist workshop series sponsored by Jarrett Thor Fine Arts. My involvement with these |
workshops had opened up my exposure to the local art community and several gallery openings, including several solo exhibitions as well as group and salon shows.
Painting challenges me to let go of the idea of perfection and explore my own sensitivity to contrasting environments. My work juxtaposes the dramatically different feelings of excitement and isolation in rural and urban settings though graphic compositional elements, the interplay of light and shadow, and striking color contrast. Raised on a farm in Ohio, I found serenity in the isolated environment. This upbringing influences my perception of the exciting urban environment. My goal is to translate my experiences to the viewer so they can feel the enthusiasm and detachment to the scene.
I utilize rich shadows to create contrast as a means to help intensify the composition and highlight a particular moment. The subject matter of my work is based on my experiences and travels. By featuring my love of both rural and urban environment, I share with the viewer the way the light draws one into the surroundings.
