Bio
I have been a painter in Wasington DC for 40 years, making mainly figurative work, including portraits, some on commission. I’ve had five one person shows and been included in numerous group shows in the area. I’ve received honors and awards that include, most recently, the Franz and Virginia Bader Award, and a third residency at the Vermont Studio Center. I have currently been teaching in the art department at Montgomery College for ten years.

Artist Statement
"Over the years, I’ve explored different sorts of imagery, but I’ve more often painted people – friends and family; acquaintances and strangers; isolated, or in meaningful contexts to create images with personal content. I have also returned regularly to the self-portrait, often with a particular environment and meaning. The format, scale and concepts of my paintings have varied. They are always life size, or nearly so, and sometimes larger. Some appear as straight-forward portraits while others do not. All are personal in some way. The more conventional ones here include family members in representative attitudes, and the same for the self-portraits. The Selfies are drawn from the culture and changes in technology and my somewhat awkward attempt to fit into them, both literally and figuratively. Here I used an iPad rather the my traditional camera (or a “smart” phone, which I do not yet have), for this series of self-portraits, trying to combine whole body portraiture with the common “selfie” technique, resulting in images that are restricted and distorted due to the length of my arms."
