Artist Statement
“How do plants transcend boundaries? Since I have traveled abroad some, I have seen that most people love to see and be in nature, if not in reality, then in 2-dimensions. They have plants in their homes to experience greenery.
”Plants and flower gardens add joy to daily life of everyone everywhere. The mind seems to enjoy pleasant colors. Therefore, wherever I go, I always pay attention to greenery of places- so far - tropical, Mediterranean, arid, humid subtropical or moderate. Each climate has its own particular plant life. “Plants can provide medicines, food, fuel, used for making textiles and alleviate climate changes and other benefits of which I have not thought. Plants really do transform boundaries. Most of my most exotic travel art has been created when I have gone to Europe or Africa. ”Also, I traveled to Argentina in South America, China, Morocco, where I enjoyed and painted the beauty in those countries. Sometimes, I find lovely settings in my home country. But any of these places provide the inspiration for me to paint. They can be just unusual locations around Washington, DC, my home town. “National Parks, cherry blossoms in March or April, nature is a strong motivator. The US Botanical Gardens, near the US Capitol building, has a green house filled with luscious plants and flowers. Open to the public. I do love the Impressionistic painting style from France, |
the Spanish Modernists of the Mediterranean, the sandy pastel colors of the Sahara of Egypt and Morocco and the rich earth tones of Kenya, in sub-Saharan Africa.
“My formal training took place at Moore College of Art and Design in Philadelphia, where I earned a B.F.A. in graphic design. Before my newspaper career, I designed graphics in television stations; and major advertising agencies in Washington DC area. ”While an editorial news artist at The Washington Post News Art, I created pages and graphics for the weekly Real Estate section, among other sections, where I developed an appreciation for houses, buildings and accompanying architectural detail and landscapes. “After leaving The Post, I now focus on getting a Certificate of Digital Graphic Design at Montgomery College, painting, traveling and designing graphics that promote the visual and performing arts. I now serve as a program volunteer at the newest Smithsonian museum, National Museum of African American History and Culture. It focuses of history and culture of African Americans, which is loaded with over 300 years of visual material to study and enjoy!” - Carol Porter
