As the Union Army retreated from the Cedar Mountain area in August of 1862, they were followed by slaves who saw this as an opportunity to escape their condition of bondage. Photographer Timothy O’Sullivan captured what is considered one of the few known images of slaves escaping to freedom across the Rappahannock River, a crossing known then as Cow Ford.
