Will Watson, Washington, DC
BIO
Will Watson was born October 7, 1987. He grew up in a single parent household on the east side of Indianapolis, Indiana with his mother and three sisters. Will had to deal with his share of unfortunate mishaps, and hardships throughout his life and at a young age Will discovered that had a gift in Art, so he continued to pursue and practice Art throughout his entire educational career.
In Lawrence Township School district, Will began to blossom and grow as a bright young man, full of energy, and outstanding character. He became very active in the Arts by participating in school contest and doing projects for his church. He Graduated from Lawrence North High School in 2006. There he created strong bonds with his peers students, as well as left an ever-lasting impression on the faculty and staff as a future leader.
In the Fall of 2006, Will began classes at IUPUI, planning to pursue a career in Art Education. However, Will became overwhelmed with problems at home, peer pressure, the difficulty of large lectures, long papers, heavy reading materials, and all around lack of preparation. He struggled to raise his Grade Point Average and do the necessary things a student must do to survive. After nearly flunking out, he quickly turned his act around and stayed active working with campus organizations such as IUPUIs Black Student Union, Student African American Brotherhood, and joined Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity Inc. Through hard work, support, and dedication, he raised his grade point average from a 1.7 CUM GPA and graduated in May 2011 with a 3.0 CUM GPA.
Will received a very comfortable position with Goodwill Education Initiatives after graduation and worked at The Excel Center as a Life Coach before deciding to leave and pursue a career as a visual artist in September 2012. Will’s decision to leave his job and pursue this dream was yet mere test of faith. He has been a feature artist for many galleries and art shows throughout Indianapolis, Cincinnati, and Chicago to name a few. Will has seen many successes, many failures, has had some good times, and some bad, however he knows that his belief and faith in God will always bring him success throughout his journey.
Statement
The motivation of my work is inspired by my experience as an African American male and my encounters with life, as well as poetry, art, culture, and music. The Hip Hop culture and people I meet daily influence the content and visual approach to the images I create. Colors I use often reflect the influences of graffiti, surrealism, and abstract expressionist art. The overall structure of my work moves with rhythmic shapes and patterns, influenced by my careful mark making and assemblage. Shapes and patterns I use originate from an inspiration of music and spoken word poetry. Occasionally I create abstract work that is purely a documentation of my emotions, leaving the viewer to come up with their own perception. While, other times I find influence from life and all of its imperfections. When looking at my art, I would like to invite my viewers to step into my world, I want them to feel the emotions depicted in the images. I want my viewers to laugh, sing, dance, protest, celebrate, empathize, groove and vibe to the rhythms expressed in my work. I truly feel if the outcome of my work is pleasing to me there will always be somebody else who will enjoy my work as well.
“An artist' most satisfying and best work is not what he/she paints, draws, sculpts or designs.. but it is what he/she sees when they look in the mirror.. Find beauty in your life! You are God’s creation…You are beautiful.. You are art!” - Will Watson
